Accredited Agencies Should Not Rely on Random BWC Review

Obtaining and maintaining accreditation is fundamental for law enforcement agencies committed to excellence, transparency, and continuous improvement.

In this blog post, we will focus on CALEA accreditation, but the same principles apply to other state accrediting agencies.

In modern policing, CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) represents the gold standard in policing, ensuring agencies adhere to internationally recognized benchmarks for professionalism, accountability, and community trust.

A critical CALEA standard (41.3.10) explicitly mandates systematic reviews of audio and video recordings from in-car and body-worn cameras (BWCs). It is crucial that these reviews identify exemplary officer performance and provide sufficient data to evaluate whether departmental policy, training, and operational practices align with the organization's mission, vision, and values.

Random review processes fall far short of meeting this rigorous standard. By their very nature, these random reviews fail to capture exemplary performance, as instances of officer professionalism are rarely observed by chance. Additionally, their inherent lack of comprehensive data analysis makes it impossible to fully assess whether agency policies and training effectively align with organizational objectives. As a result, relying on random reviews is fundamentally incompatible with the high standards of accountability and excellence demanded by CALEA and other accrediting entities.

TRULEO provides a superior alternative that not only meets, but exceeds accreditation requirements. Powered by advanced artificial intelligence, TRULEO analyzes 100% of an agency's BWC footage, effectively identifying both exceptional officer performance and critical training opportunities. Its sophisticated analytics ensure comprehensive data coverage, allowing agencies to objectively evaluate their policies, training effectiveness, and operational practices with unmatched precision.

In 2024, TRULEO saved departments over 1.6 million hours of manual review time, drastically enhancing efficiency while ensuring compliance with rigorous accreditation standards. More than just streamlining operations, TRULEO enables consistent, objective, and proactive evaluations, significantly improving officer morale and refining training by automating the recognition of exemplary professionalism and best practices. By eliminating the need for manual review, TRULEO also mitigates supervisor bias, fostering a fairer and more effective assessment process.

Ultimately, departments dedicated to maintaining accredited agency status through either CALEA or a state certifying authority require more than “rolling the dice” when reviewing BWC videos to uphold a commitment to excellence. TRULEO provides the consistent and strategic solution necessary for meaningful compliance, continuous improvement, and sustained community trust.
