Why Every Police Department Needs an AI Policy—Now

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to make its way into the public sector, law enforcement agencies are finding new opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce administrative burden, and gain deeper insights from existing data, especially body-worn camera footage. But as with any powerful tool, AI requires intentional forethought and planning.
Developing a clear, well-defined policy is essential before implementing AI into police department operations. Your policy should address boundaries, build trust, and ensure transparency for the public, consistency for officers, and accountability for leadership.
When creating your policy, consider answering the following questions:
- What types of AI are appropriate?
- How is data protected?
- Who is responsible for oversight?
Without a policy, your department’s use of AI can incite confusion among your officers or, even worse, the public. Having a solid policy can do wonders with safeguarding public confidence and minimizing fairness or bias concerns.
With the proper policy, AI becomes a tool that produces successful outcomes for everyone—officers, departments, and the communities they serve.
